Another day at sea but this one was not spent on the open deck lounging on the deck chairs - it was way to cold to sit out on deck - at least it was for us - although we did see some folks sitting out there. We basically spent the day doing a variety of activities to keep ourselves busy.
We started off at 9:15 going to the Princess book club. We had joined the book club during the first week of the cruise and both Mike and I read a Mary Higgins Clark book called “Just Take My Heart”. It was a good book but was definitely not one of her best. I wondered if her book publisher had just asked her to grind out one. There were about 15 of us in attendance, but alas no one from the crew showed up to moderate the group. So, a woman who herself is a published author (Merline Lovelace) started us off. Although we had some interesting thoughts shared, it really wasn’t what we were hoping for. The discussion about the book we read (there were five choices given out at the first meeting) went very short and the rest or the time was spent talking about other books and other things.
Next we went to the Brainbuster Trivia. We ended up in a group of 4 with our new friends Janet and John from England. We met them at dinner one evening and have sat with them a few time since. They are a really nice couple (70 and 75) and we enjoyed trying to answer the questions. They are so hard, though, and we only ended up with 9 out of 22, but that was better than the 7 we got last time. :-)
Next was a race to the Princess Theatre (at the other end of the ship) to hear John Maxtone-Graham. Today’s talk was about his family and particularly about a book written by his aunt about the cousins in the family. John has a twin brother named Michael and the poem written by his aunt about him and his twin was called ‘Ruthless Mike and Reckless John’. He is such an interesting speaker and I bet he could read the phone book and make it sound good. In fact, he says that is the title of his next lecture.
Lunch today we had upstairs as it was a Mexican buffet. I thought they would have more stuff than they did, but what they did have was yummy. I had a chicken taco with all the fixings and Mike had a beef one. Since it was Mexican it was a bit too spicy for me but Mike said it was great. I just ended up drinking a lot of lemonade. :-)
After lunch, we decided to go to an art auction. We have never been to one and we thought it would be interesting to attend it. Basically what they do onboard is show all the art before the auction and then the pieces of art are brought to the front of the lounge one by one and the auctioneer/art expert tells about each selection and then she tells what the opening bid will be and then people bid on it. There was very little bidding going on with each piece, but a few pieces were bought on this cruise. The most expensive piece bought was about $700. There were some beautiful pieces of art that I really liked, but they were definitely out of our price range and the one that I loved the most was so big we would never have a room big enough to display it. :-)
After that it was time for Passenger vs. Cruise Staff Trivia. We met up with Janet and John and also with another couple to make our team of 6. This time the questions were much easier. :-) The idea of the game was to try and answer all 20 questions correctly. Four members of the cruise staff (entertainment area) would try and answer the questions also and try to beat any of the other teams playing. Ben and Melissa are in their mid 20s and Gavin is around 30 and Julie is around 35 (the cruise team). Our team got 15 out of 20 and the winning team got 17 out of 20, so we felt pretty good about how we did (btw, the cruise team got 10 out of 20).
Dinner tonight was a very delicious sirloin steak for me and a yummy veal scallopene for Mike. I forgot again to mention to the waiter to only bring me half a steak, so Mike helped me to finish it off.
Entertainment tonight was Michael Young, an Australian multi-instrumentalist. He played the banjo, the mandolin, the tin flute and a shell. He was quite talented and gave a good show.
